Repeat Prescriptions

Prescribing of over‑the‑counter medicines is changing

Your GP won’t usually prescribe medicines that can be bought over-the-counter for minor health concerns.

You can always get the advice and medicines you need from your local pharmacy without an appointment.

Healthcare professionals at your local pharmacy can offer help and clinical advice to manage minor health concerns. If your symptoms suggest it’s more serious they’ll ensure you get the care you need.

For more information please visit: prescriptionchanges.co.uk

If the GP has authorised your medicines for repeat issues, they can be ordered by:

  • Bringing your prescriptions counterfoil to Reception
  • Posting the prescription counterfoil
  • By nominating a pharmacy to order your medication and either collect your prescription or receive it electronically from the practice.
  • By requesting your prescription online using SystmOnline: login here. Please ask a member of staff for access information

Please allow 48 hours for your prescription to be ready for collection. There may be times when we are unable to process your request and you may be advised to see a Clinician for a review.

Questions about your prescription

If you have questions about your medicine or your prescription please contact the surgery.

Your local pharmacists can also answer any questions about your prescription. They can answer questions on medicines you can buy without a prescription.

What is the Electronic Prescription Service?

EPS is an NHS funded service in England. It gives you the chance to change how your GP sends your prescription to the healthcare professional you choose to get your medications or appliances from.

What does this mean for you?

If you currently collect your repeat prescriptions from your GP you will not have to visit your GP practice to pick up your paper prescription. Instead, your GP will send it electronically to the place you choose, saving you time.

You will have more choice about where to get your medicines from because they can be collected from a pharmacy near to where you live, work or shop.

Is this service right for you?

Yes - if you have a stable condition and you:

  • Don’t want to go to your GP practice every time to collect your repeat prescription
  • Collect your medicines from the same place most of the time
  • Already use a prescription collection service

No - if you:

  • Don’t get prescriptions very often
  • Pick up your medicine from different places
  • Travel or work away from home a lot
